PRESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
Aug. 15, 2013
As of late this afternoon, all five families named in a potential lawsuit against the Mehlville School District (MSD) have been placed in a school district in which they are satisfied. As such the Children’s Education Alliance of Missouri will not file a lawsuit at this time.
Since MSD was served copies of the lawsuit on Aug. 6, along with a letter outlining expectations that needed to be met in order to avoid legal action against the district, MSD, Kirkwood School District, the Cooperating School Districts of Saint Louis and CEAM have worked tirelessly to develop a solution that would be in the best interest of all children involved in the suit and the children in the affected school districts.
The five families in the potential suit were placed in school districts acceptable to them over the last several days. “Every day my daughter would ask me, ‘Momma, do I have a school yet?’” said Lajunta Brown, who lives with her daughter in Riverview Gardens. “It broke my heart to have to tell her, ‘not yet baby, but we’re not giving up.’ Now I get to show her that fighting for your rights and your education does pay off. I can’t thank the Kirkwood and Mehlville school district, CSD, CEAM and all the lawyers enough for what they have done for my family.”
CEAM continues to work with families to ensure all kids have access to a high quality education.
