CSI Schools: Where they are and what their test scores are

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is required to identify the worst performing schools in the state (which are called Comprehensive Support and Improvement schools under ESSA).

The list identifies the worst performing 5 percent of Title I schools (61 schools in total) based on a variety of metrics including academic status, academic growth, English Language learners and attendance.

Where are the schools located?

The schools on the list are scattered throughout the state and include both traditional district schools and charter schools, but the majority of the schools are located in the St. Louis (30 schools) and Kansas City area (14 schools) with the next largest cluster being located in Springfield (5 schools). Check out the interactive map below to see where each school is located, what their proficiencies in ELA and math are, and which schools are traditional district (blue) or public charter (red) schools.

How are the schools doing in academics?

DESE will not release the individual scores each school received in the evaluation but a quick glance at their 2018 MAP and EOC scores is revealing.

Out of the 61 schools there are 33 schools where more than 90 percent of the students are not proficient at math and 9 schools were more than 90 percent of the students are not proficient at ELA.

Other takeaways

Although there are a few public charter schools on the list traditional district schools make up the bulk of the CSI schools.

In St. Louis City, 15 district schools were listed as CSI school compared to only 4 charter schools and district schools accounted for 9 of the 10 worst performing schools in the city on math and 8 of the 10 worst performing schools on ELA.

In Kansas City, 10 district schools were listed as CSI school compared to only 3 charter schools and district schools accounted for 8 of the 10 worst performing schools in the city on math and 9 of the 10 worst performing schools on ELA.

It is also worth noting that while Springfield (a district with a student enrollment similar to Kansas City) had the third largest concentration of CSI schools regionally, Riverview Gardens, a much smaller district that just petitioned the state grant them full accreditation, had the third highest number of CSI schools by district.
